Archival Mashup

I’m really digging archival footage repurposed – specifically works that are coupled with juxtaposing music. I am interested in incorporating this art-form into my own art practice – and how it relates to the notions of nostalgia and subverting associations/contexts.

I especially love the combination of a musical element with historical footage. Why do I love the pairing of these elements so much? Perhaps it is the re-contextualising of existing artistic elements? Or the combination of different decades that normally would not be thrown together?

However when using appropriated imagery/film one has to be careful what narrative they are (perhaps unconsciously) projecting. For instance in the film below we have to acknowledge the fact most of the footage was shot in a colonial Australia - and this in turn negates how (and if) we are shown Aboriginal people or associated customs. Further, how most of the footage is of white people of a certain class.

Anyway definitely want to get into making some films exploring appropriated archival footage

Photographic Thought

Photography as a form of documentation:

I’m really inspired by photographers that make use of their living situation/social circles and subsequently use these subjects as a basis for their projects. Like the works of Cecil Beaton and Man Ray, Nan Goldin also captures the sitter’s energy in a really powerful way. The portraits feel very intimate and raw – often depicting scenes very typical of the time they were shot in. I think this more organic and relaxed style would be really fun to explore within my practice. Also the combination of typical portrait shots with different mediums such as collage or knitting could be interesting. What would this style of portraiture look like within a non-photographic medium?
